This weekend sees the first ever Waszp event in Northern Ireland with the opening event in the 2024 season and start of the new Waszp Four Nations Cup.
This will no doubt bring exciting racing for both competitors and spectators alike who will be able to watch from the Ballyholme shoreline.
Event organisers plan to keep the racing close to the shore and will mirror the format of sail GP racing with a reach start and an exciting first mark bear away.
Competitors include X2 time Olympian and current 49er coach- Matt Mcgovern from Ballyholme, current Irish Waszp National Champion and previous Waszp World Slalom Champion Charlie Cullen from Dun Laoghaire, and Andrew Bridgham from Guernsey who finished 12th in 2023 Waszp World Games.
Despite this talent, there will no doubt multiple spills and wipeout as boats will reach up to 25 kn.
Come down to the club if you want to see the boats up close or speak to any of the competitors.
Racing starts at 12 midday on Saturday under the command of RYA race official- Sheela Louis.
