Seasearch Observer Course
Saturday 7th May 2022
This course enables amateur divers to observe, note and submit a report from any dives on the state of the marine environment and the associated fauna and flora.
These data are uploaded to a central database and are used by the Marine Conservation Society amongst others in helping to form policy and other conservation activities.
The course will start at 9:00 and the classroom section will end around 17:00 after which there is the option of a dive on the grid. For those unfamiliar this is a rope trail from Ballyholme yacht Club and returning there with a total length of c. 0.3 of a mile with a max depth of 9.0 m. The trail is clearly marked with direction arrows and will be cleaned as far as is possible before the course of any new weed growth. Wide variety of life is seen from stalked jellyfish to lesser spotted cat sharks and even John Dory.
Showers are available and an air fill is available if required but given the time/tide constraints it is better if participants arrive with full cylinders.
HW is c. 16:25 and will be neap so any current will be slight.
A DSMB must be carried by all divers and each diver pair must deploy a DSMB before entry into the water. NO DSMB = NO DIVE.
There will be full shore cover following BSAC procedures.
Cost: £5 for members
£10 for non-members
Please note there is a non-refundable administrative charge of £1.50 per transaction.
Participants will be on water from 5pm and will need their own kit.
