The RYA Scheme has been designed to help you progress rapidly and accessibly through the sport.

RYA Start Windsurfing Course

This is the first course in the RYA National Windsurfing Scheme for adults (16 year old and over). There are no prerequisites other than having a degree of water confidence.

This gentle introduction will teach you the basics of windsurfing over a 2-day course, comprising some classroom theory, use of a dryland simulator rig and approximately 8hrs on the water.

By the end of the course, you will be able to confidently sail to where you want to go, turn the board around and get back to shore whilst knowing how to always remain safe. With a bit more practice following the course you’ll soon start to feel very comfortable afloat.

The course will be delivered by an RYA Start Windsurfing instructor, with a maximum of 3 students (on the course 12/13 April), using beginner windsurf boards and small rigs.

We have a selection of rigid and inflatable boards for you to use. If you have your own kit, please bring it along, but it may not be suitable to get the most from this course.

Our changing rooms have lovely warm showers for the end of the session!

**Whilst Ballyholme Bay is quite sheltered, courses may be cancelled or curtailed if the weather conditions are forecast to be unfavourable for learning windsurfing.

What’s included: RYA Logbook, Start Windsurfing Book, tuition, kit hire and use of BYC facilities. RYA Certificate also included but not guaranteed unless on successful completion of course.

You will be getting very wet, so appropriate clothing is required.

You will need:

• A full wetsuit, thickness depending on time of year (minimum 3mm)
  • Can be provided by BYC (however can’t guarantee all sizes)
• Swim wear for under your wetsuit
• Wetsuit boots/shoes or trainers
• Buoyancy Aid
  • Can be provided by BYC.
• Change of clothes
• Towel
• Packed lunch and a drink

Not essential, but a good idea:

• Dryrobe – ideal to stay warm when ashore between sessions
• Sailing gloves
• Woolly hat, sunglasses, sun cream (for variable Northern Ireland weather)
• Flask of tea / coffee
