RYA Day Skipper Course
This shorebased course equips you with enough knowledge to navigate around familiar waters by day. A basic knowledge of lights is also included to introduce you to night cruising.
At Ballyholme Yacht Club, this course is offered on Thursday evenings, from 6:30pm.
Course topics include:
- the basics of seamanship
- the essentials of coastal navigation and pilotage
- chartwork
- electronic charts
- position fixing
- plotting a course to steer
- weather forecasting and meteorology
- tides
- collision regulations
- construction, parts and equipment of a cruising boat
- emergency and safety procedures including distress calls,use of flares, safety harnesses, lifejackets and liferafts
Dates – Starting on Thursday 8th September 2022 and running for 4 months
Time – 6:30-9:00 pm (Minimum of 40 hours of teaching)

Please note there is a non-refundable administrative charge of £1.50.
The Day Skipper shorebased course is for those that have done little or no actual navigation, regardless of whether you have a lot of sailing experience or none.
The course includes lots of navigation (including use of GPS and electronic charts), meteorology, collision regulations and safety procedures.
The course equips you with enough knowledge to navigate around familiar waters by day. A basic knowledge of lights is also included to introduce you to night cruising.
Minimum Pre Course Experience
Great if you have done some sailing before but doesn’t matter if you haven’t.
Ability after the Course
Background knowledge to skipper a small yacht in familiar waters by day.
