Kayak Training Course

BYC Training is pleased to be able to offer a 4 week Kayak course commencing on Saturday 29th May (please note all other weeks are on Sunday) with Rachy Sinnamon from Wild Mountain Flow.

Each week will be a one hour session. We have 18 places available, and these will be split across 3 separate timeslots, with 6 students in each group.

The times and type of craft are as follows :

 

Group A (sit on kayak) – 0915 hrs – 1015 hrs

Group B (sit on kayak) – 1030 hrs – 1130 hrs

Group C (sit in kayak) – 1145 hrs – 1245 hrs

Whichever session slot you choose will be the same for each of the four weeks.

Please note that the first week’s sessions will take place on Saturday  29th May. Weeks 2, 3 and 4 will be on Sundays.

 

The cost for the 4 week course is £40 per person.

Recommended for ages 16+.  Any under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.

**Participants must have their own kayaks to take part**

 

Some equipment is required for week 3: A 3m tow line and a karabiner.

Course Structure will be as follows:

Week 1: SATURDAY 29th May

  • Kit checks, kayak & paddle set up & launching.
  • Forward paddling – posture & correct technique.
  • Stopping.
  • Basic forwards turning (one side stroke).
  • Low brace (first port of call to prevent capsize).
  • Landing.

 

Week 2: Sunday 6th June

  • Recap.
  • Reverse turning.
  • Advanced turning (using forward and reverse stroke combo)
  • Draw stroke (moving sidewards).
  • Putting it all into practice (slow technique, fast technique, working in pairs, races for some fun).

 

Week 3 (wet week – will also help water confidence): Sunday 13th June

  • Rescues & gear.
  • Self rescue & buddy rescue.
  • Balance check (turning around in kayak, switching kayaks, standing in kayak – while kayaking is a sit and enjoy sport, you need to be dynamic and have the technique to be self sufficient, or help your buddy).
  • Tows *

 

Week 4 (on the water for a short time): Sunday 20th June

  • Pointers on technique/improvements on the water.

Then off the water for debrief & chat/questions.

  • Staying safe – weather, conditions, tides & what to pack on a trip out, judgement & decision making, setting yourself skills & rescue days.
