RYA Start Windsurfing Course Description
This course is designed for those looking to experience the thrill of windsurfing for the first time. Whether you’re looking to pick up a new hobby, enjoy the water, or progress to more advanced skills, this course is perfect for beginners with little or no prior experience.
Over the course of the program, you’ll be introduced to the basics of windsurfing, including understanding the wind, balancing on the board, and learning the fundamentals of rigging and controlling the sail. You’ll spend plenty of time on the water, practicing your skills with guidance from experienced instructors, ensuring you feel confident as you progress.
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
Rig and de-rig the windsurfing equipment safely.
Understand basic wind direction and how it affects your sailing.
Balance on the board and control the sail to steer and move in different directions.
Perform basic manoeuvres such as going upwind and turning around.
This course is structured around the RYA Start Windsurfing certification, and you’ll receive a logbook to track your progress and accomplishments. All equipment is provided, and no previous sailing or windsurfing experience is required.

Course Overview:
Instructor: RYA Start Windsurfing Certified Instructor
Group Size: Maximum of 4 students
Location: Ballyholme Bay (weather permitting)
Duration: 2 day course
All prices include RYA certification, expert tuition, kit hire, and use of BYC facilities.
What’s Included:
RYA Certification upon completion
Professional tuition from a certified instructor
Kit hire (all necessary equipment provided)
Use of BYC facilities, including warm showers for after your session
What to Bring
To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, please bring the following gear:
Full wetsuit (5mm thickness recommended; available from BYC but subject to availability)
Swimwear (for under the wetsuit)
Wetsuit boots or trainers
Buoyancy Aid (provided by BYC)
Change of clothes (for after your session)
Sailing/neoprene gloves
Woolly hat (for warmth)
Towel
Snacks, Lunch and a drink to keep hydrated
Recommended Extras:
Dryrobe (ideal for staying warm when ashore)
Sunglasses and sunscreen (for sunny or variable weather)
Flask of tea or coffee (to keep cosy during breaks)
Important Notes:
While Ballyholme Bay is sheltered, courses may be cancelled or shortened if weather conditions are not ideal for windsurfing.
Expect to get wet! Proper clothing is essential to stay warm and comfortable during your lesson.
