RYA Level 4 & Start Racing Youth Sailing Course – Summer 2025

Get ready to elevate your sailing experience this summer with our RYA Level 4 & Start Racing Youth Sailing Courses at Ballyholme Yacht Club. This exciting course is designed for young sailors aged 8-16 who are ready to take their sailing to the next stage. Whether your child is looking to refine their skills, learn the basics of racing, or boost their confidence on the water, this course is the perfect opportunity for them to grow as a sailor.

Course Duration:
5 Days, Monday to Friday

9.30am – 4.30pm

What Your Child Will Learn:

Advanced sailing techniques, including improved boat handling and performance sailing

Introduction to racing strategies, tactics, and rules of racing

How to optimise boat speed and positioning in racing scenarios

Advanced skills for steering, trimming sails, and managing boat speed in different conditions

An understanding of the key elements of race starts, marks, and finishes

Techniques for racing in different weather conditions, including handling challenging winds

How to perform advanced manoeuvres, such as spinnaker handling (depending on conditions)

Key safety procedures specific to racing, including recovery and rescue techniques in competitive scenarios

Who is it for?
The RYA Level 4 & Start Racing course is perfect for young sailors aged 8-16 who have already completed RYA Level 1 and 2 (or have equivalent skills) and are eager to develop their sailing to a higher standard.

This course is designed to introduce them to the exciting world of racing while enhancing their overall sailing ability.

Picos, Quests & Qubes (Boat hire and equipment use included in tickets or if you have your own boat please select ticket applicable)

Timings

09:30 – Arrival on site

16:30 – Wrapping up after an action-packed day

Sailors to pack

Appropriate Sailing kit (wetsuit, spray top, boots, buoyancy aid, swimming costume, towel)

If you dont have sailing kit don’t worry we have you covered! Please bring a spare pair of trainers you don’t mind getting wet!

(for safety reasons no wellies, crocs or flip flops please! pack your swimming costume and towel)

Snacks, drinks, and a packed lunch to fuel you throughout the day

Warm clothes for before and after the training

Pen and notepad for any notes, racing watch and cap (if applicable)

Pro Tips

Hydrate and snack up! (We’ll be on the water, so you’ll want to stay fuelled up.)

Even if the skies are cloudy, keep the sunblock and cap on hand—you’ll thank us later.

Changing rooms and showers are available to freshen up.
