Dolphin & Sharks Summer Training Camp

Beginning 3rd May

For cadets who are part of family membership, Friday nights D&S will commence on Friday 3rd May at 6:30pm.

Dolphins and Sharks is run by parent volunteers to enable their children to get out on the water and have fun in a safe, supervised environment, it is not an RYA course, however if children wish to take out boats by themselves they must have RYA stage 3.

Registration will take place each week and will open on a Monday morning at 8am and close on Thursday at 12 noon, please note, the system may close early if all spaces are taken.  In May & June there will be no charge but in July & August there will be a nominal charge.

When the children are on the water, they are the responsibility of the helms, instructors and the rescue crew.  HOWEVER, when they are ashore and around the clubhouse, they are PARENTS responsibility, for e.g. Playing on rocks, jetty jumping and out on the kayaks.

  1. Dolphin & Sharks Summer Training CampBeginning 6th of JulyIt is hard to believe that we are coming to the end of the free D & S sessions of May & June. It has been a great success this year with record numbers and we would like to thank all parents and family who have so willingly helped out.We have been in consultation with the BYC Training and the Sailing Committee on how to advance with July and August sessions. As a result, the D&S Committee has agreed that we would like to provide tuition on Friday evenings and will therefore be splitting the group up into different sailing abilities. This will give an opportunity to those who wish to advance their skills an opportunity to do so.Numbers will be limited to 50 per week and we will be offering a longer sailing session at a cost of £6 per child. The cap on numbers should not be an issue as historically numbers have dropped due to holidays and other activities etc.Registration will continue as normal each week, opening at 0800 hrs on a Monday and closing at 1200 hrs on the Thursday. The only difference will be the online payment to BYC.We propose that there will be 3 tuition groups led by instructors – Bahias as normal for the less experienced Dolphins, SailQubes for the younger more experienced helms and Laser Picos/ RS Fevas for the older children. Whilst we are providing more tuition, we wish to stress that this is not an RYA course.Despite the presence of Qualified Instructors, we will still need parent volunteers to help the evenings run smoothly, and we will continue to keep you posted on WhatsApp / text message as normal. Please note that from the end of June we will no longer be providing sailing gear unless agreed in advance with Heidi or Shelley. At this point, we would hope that you would consider buying a wetsuit and buoyancy aid for your young sailor. Please note CH Marine in Newtownards are offering a 10% discount upon the production of your BYC membership card.As normal, children are our responsibility when on the boats but once ashore they are the parents responsibility (for example, playing on rocks, jetty jumping and even if out on the kayaks!).FYI parents that are non members can use the facilities up to 6 times over the summer and will be signed in as a group by the Club for 6 weeks. There will be NO Dolphin & Sharks on Friday 27th July due to the Club Regatta the next day. Our own Regatta Club will be taking place in the morning of the Regatta after the Corinthian Cup. More details to follow on both.ClothingWetsuitBuoyancy AidSpray top/coatShoes or boots that can get wetHat and glovesChild ProtectionWe need all volunteers to be Access NI checked.
