Dear Member

Last week the sailing committee established a new group to refresh, promote and re-organise Safety & Rescue at Ballyholme.  Our goal is to make Safety & Rescue a broad, inclusive and enjoyable experience for those who take part whilst providing the club members the safety and rescue services required for the many water based activities undertaken at Ballyholme.

Rename.  We feel that our focus should be more towards Safety rather than Rescue and so a minor rebrand has been undertaken to reflect this.

Restructure.  We have restructured so as to spread the load across a broader set of club members and allowing them to bring their many talents to the fore.

In this regard we plan to have 4 Safety Teams each with a team leader.  Whereas this is not necessarily new, in fact a 4 team structure was in place up until relatively recently, we are augmenting this quartet with a Bosun and a Convenor.

The line-up is as follows:

Bosun: Andrew ‘Kenny’ Kennington.  Kenny is a diver and has an absolute wealth of experience in working and repairing engines, boats and all things mechanical. Having seen his qualifications you cannot imagine anyone would be better qualified.

Convenor: Nick Scott.  Nick is new to Ballyholme but brings his background as a regulatory barrister to the role of Convenor.

Fastnet Lead: Ross Johnston.  Ross is Ballyholme’s Chief powerboat instructor and has been helping with rescue and mark laying for the past 6 years. He is in his 2nd year at Queens studying mechanical engineering.

Bailey Lead: Finlay Mclees.  Finlay is also one of our powerboat instructors who has many years experience in rescue and mark laying. He twice represented Ballyholme in the RYA Honda Youth RIB Championship.

Rockall and Forties Leads: Currently Vacant.

We hope that teams will be diverse in terms of age and experienced so as to provide opportunities to learn as well as creating bonds across the membership and making Safety and Rescue both fun and rewarding.

Your club needs YOU!

If you would like to be part of this initiative, please get in touch.  We aren’t looking for lots of your time and it will be spread across the season.  Also, we don’t demand experience – enthusiasm and a willingness to learn more important!  If you’re interested then please get in touch with our team on or via facebook ( or contact any of the members directly.

We look forward to hearing from you.
